Two alleged wildlife smugglers held with lizard in Khulna

KHULNA, Aug 13, 2020 (BSS) – Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Wednesday arrested two alleged wildlife smugglers from Batiaghata upazila in Khulna along with a valuable wild lizard (gecko).

The arrested are Ariful Islam alias Sagar, 42, son of Rostom Ali, hailed from Rupsha Strand Road in the city and Milon Sheikh, 34, son of Abdur Rob Sheikh, of Aruadanga village under Fakirhat Police Station of Bagerhat, said a RAB-6 press release.

On secret information, a team of RAB conducted a drive at Katianagla village under Gangarampur union in the upazila and arrested the two wildlife smugglers when they were selling a valuable gecko to a customer around 4.30pm.

The RAB members also recovered a gecko from the smugglers while the customer managed to flee, the press release also said.

Bangladesh to register positive growth despite global recession: StanChart

DHAKA, Aug 13, 2020 (BSS) – Despite a global recession which is shaping up to be historic in scale, Bangladesh might be one of only two ASEAN and South Asian economies to register positive growth in 2020, observed Standard Chartered’s leading economists recently.

“While uncertainties remain, the worst is most likely over,” they said while speaking at a media session held following the 2020 Bangladesh session of the Bank’s Global Research Briefing series, said a press release here today.

Over 300 of the bank’s clients joined via video conferencing during the event, to participate in a unique digital experience.

Speaking on the occasion, Standard Chartered’s economist for the South Asia Saurav Anand said they remain cautiously positive on the Bangladesh’s growth prospects given economic resilience as well as fiscal and monetary room available to support growth.

Industries not to be set up here and there: BIDA meeting

DHAKA, Aug 13, 2020 (BSS) – The National Steering Committee on Ease
of Doing Business today held discussions to take decision on not to
let industries to be set up here and there, rather separate zones
would be allocated for separate industries.

This was discussed at a virtual National Steering Committee meeting
on Ease of Doing Business organized by Bangladesh Investment
Development Authority (BIDA).

Chaired by Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal, Commerce Minister
Tipu Munshi, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, Local Government Minister
Md Tajul Islam, PM’s Adviser on Private Industry and Investment Salman
F Rahman, State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain,
State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, State Minister
for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid and BIDA
Executive Chairman M Sirajul Islam joined the meeting, among others,
said a Finance Ministry press release.

Feels good to know Sri Lanka tour is confirmed: Soumya

Bangladesh opener Soumya Sarkar said after today’s individual practice session at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur that he felt very good to know that the Tigers’ upcoming tour of Sri Lanka has now been confirmed. 

Bangladesh were originally scheduled to play a three-Test series in Sri Lanka in July-August before the series was postponed. After months of discussion between the two concerned boards — BCB and SLC — it was yesterday confirmed through a media release that the Bangladesh national team will return to competitive cricket following a break imposed by the coronavirus pandemic, through their tour of Sri Lanka, slated to begin with a Test series from October 24.

‘The storm over Bangladesh economy has blown over’

Bangladesh might be one of only two ASEAN and South Asian economies to register positive growth in 2020 despite a global recession that is shaping up to be historic in scale, according to Standard Chartered Bank’s research team.

Covid-19: 44 die, 2,617 infected in 24 hours

Forty-four people — 31 male and 13 female –have died from coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, according to a press release of Directorate General of Health Services.

The death toll now stands at 3,557 and the death rate stands at 1.32 percent, the press release said.

Two thousand six hundred and seventeen people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours and the infection rate is 19.88 percent.

IPL gets nod for UAE, invites new title sponsor

India’s cricket board (BCCI) has received government permission to stage this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) in the United Arab Emirates, the league’s chairman Brijesh Patel told Reuters on Monday.

The BCCI had earlier announced the popular Twenty20 competition, which could not begin in March because of the COVID-19 pandemic, would be played in the UAE from Sept. 19, subject to government approval.

“Yes, we have received the permission from the government to stage the tournament in the UAE,” Patel said by telephone.

Flood situation turns grim in Jashore, N’ganj; 7 die in 24 hrs

The overall flood situation has worsened in Jashore and Narayanganj districts with the rise of water level in the adjacent rivers, leaving thousands of people marooned.  

The Health Directorate (DGHS), meanwhile, said the floods claimed the lives of seven people in five districts in 24 hours till Tuesday noon. 

With the latest ones, the death toll from the flood reached 198. 

In Jashore, the Ichhamati River swelled due to excessive water coming from the upper stream that inundated low-lying areas in Sharsha upazila.
