Archaeologists say they have found ancient banana farms once managed by Australia’s Indigenous peoples.
The sites, which date back 2,145 years, were found on a tiny island north of the mainland in the Torres Strait.Researchers found banana microfossils, stone tools, charcoal and a series of retaining walls at the site.
It further dispels the myth that Australia’s native peoples were solely “hunter-gatherers”, researchers said.
Scientists have succeeded in reviving microbes retrieved from sediment deep under the seafloor in the heart of the South Pacific that had survived in a dormant state for 101.5 million years in research illustrating the resiliency of life on Earth.
The microbes, spanning 10 major and numerous minor groups of bacteria, maybe the planet’s oldest-known organisms. The scientists said on Tuesday the microbes were present in clay samples drilled from the research vessel JOIDES Resolution about 245 feet (74.5 meters) under the seafloor, below 3.5 miles (5.7 km) of water.

China successfully launched an unmanned probe to Mars on Thursday in its first independent mission to another planet, a bid for global leadership in space and a display of its technological prowess and ambition.
China’s largest carrier rocket, the Long March 5 Y-4, blasted off with the probe at 12:41 p.m. (0441 GMT) from Wenchang Space Launch Centre on the southern island of Hainan.
