Waterlogging in Dhaka: Collective failure made it perennial

The desire expressed by the two Dhaka city mayors to take over the responsibility of drainage management from Dhaka Wasa in a bid to end the capital’s perennial waterlogging problem has widely been regarded as a popular idea.

But experts said just changing the custodian without addressing the core issues that have failed Wasa — such as the absence of total authority of one particular body and lack of coordination with six other organisations — might also fail the two city corporations.

The idea of handing over the drainage management to city corporations came to light last month when the two mayors — Dhaka South’s Shekih Fazle Noor Taposh and Dhaka North’s Atiqul Islam — said theywished to take over the job.

Early Islamic gold coins found in Israel

Israeli archaeologists announced on Monday they have discovered  a trove of early Islamic gold coins during recent salvage excavations near the central city of Yavne, reports AP.

The collection of 425 complete gold coins, most dating to the Abbasid period around 1,100 years ago, was an “extremely rare” find, Israel Antiquities Authorities archaeologists Liat Nadav-Ziv and Elie Haddad said in a joint statement.

The trove, which was unearthed by youth volunteers, also included hundreds of smaller clippings from gold coins that would have served as smaller denominations.

Robert Kool, a coin expert with the antiquities authority, said an initial analysis indicates the coins date from the late 9th century, considered the golden age of the Abbasid Caliphate that controlled most of the Near East and North Africa.

E-valy, the latest digital business scam

E-valy offers consumers all sorts of lucrative deals, with ‘cash back’ offers going up to 100 to 150 per cent. If you buy, for example, Tk 100 worth of goods, you can get the same amount back or even more. Thousands of consumers are being lured in by these almost unbelievable deals being offered by this Bangladeshi e-commerce company. A few are even making a profit, but most are still waiting to see the big bucks.

People should understand that the seller or the company which is giving you 100 per cent or 150 per cent cash-back is not paying from their own pocket or inheritance. They are cheating others and resorting to other unethical means.

Not even two years into the business, this company has already sold products worth Tk 10 billion (Tk 1000 crore). Yet the company’s paid-up capital is only Tk 50,000. As the business grows, a growing number of complaints have also been lodged against with various government agencies. Experts apprehend that this method of business is conducive to money laundering.
