A night like no other

On a night when Serie A saw as bizarre an event as the Napoli-Juventus fixture being abandoned as Napoli players weren’t allowed by their local health authority to travel to Turin due to coronavirus fears.

La Liga meted out a tensed 1-1 draw between Barcelona and Sevilla and the Bundesliga witnessed yet another one-man show from Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski.

Who scored all four goals including a stoppage-time penalty to give the German champions a 4-3 home win over Hertha Berlin,  the focus still turned to the Premier League.

Champions Liverpool suffered a humiliating 7-2 defeat at Aston Villa and Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho savoured a 6-1 win over his former club Manchester United in one of the most astonishing days in Premier League history.

VAR drama as Palace earn 3-1 win at Man Utd

Manchester United’s season got underway with a shock 3-1 defeat by Crystal Palace as Wilfried Zaha grabbed a late double for the visitors in the Premier League on Saturday although VAR was once again the centre of attention.

United looked off the pace early on as Andros Townsend put Palace in front after seven minutes, with the home side’s campaign starting a week later than initially scheduled due to last season’s Europa League commitments running into mid-August.

Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay went close as United chased an equaliser but the hosts could have gone in two goals behind at halftime, with only a brilliant David De Gea save keeping a goal-bound Jordan Ayew strike out.

United brought Mason Greenwood on at halftime but their task was made more difficult when the VAR decided that referee Martin Atkinson should ………..

‘You can’t compare Lewandowski and Messi’ – Bayern boss Flick

Bayern Munich coach Hansi Flick stayed neutral in the debate whether his striker Robert Lewandowski is better than Barcelona star Lionel Messi ahead of Friday’s Champions League quarter-final clash in Lisbon.

Barca face Bayern at the Estadio da Luz for a place in next Wednesday’s semi-final.

In the build-up, there has been much debate whether Lewandowski, the Champions League’s top-scorer with 13 goals in seven games, or six-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi is the better player.

Messi helps Barca sink Napoli to reach last eight

A fired-up Lionel Messi led Barcelona to a 3-1 win at home to Napoli on Saturday for a 4-2 aggregate victory which took the club into the Champions League quarter-finals for the 13th consecutive season where they face Bayern Munich.

The Catalans had a shaky start but took the lead in the 10th minute with a powerful header from a corner by Clement Lenglet before Messi scored a superb second in the 23rd, seeing off four defenders to curl the ball into the far bottom corner.

Messi had the ball in the net again soon after following a superb team move but the goal was harshly ruled out for handball by the Argentine following a VAR review, although Messi later won a penalty which Luis Suarez converted for Barca’s third.
