The government has decided to administer Covid-19 vaccines to all the citizens free of cost once those are procured.
As per the decision at a high-level meeting recently, the government will purchase vaccines as soon as those are out in the market and administer those to all like it does under the existing immunisation programmes, said finance ministry officials.
The finance ministry has already sought $2 billion in financial assistance from four development partners to purchase, store, transport and administer the vaccines.
Trials on the coronavirus vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University have resumed in Japan but not the United States, where the pharmaceutical giant is working with regulators, a statement released Friday said.
The Financial Times, citing sources close to the case, reported that the US drug regulator the FDA had expanded its investigation into the serious side effects suffered by one trial participant, which had led to a brief halt in the tests, reports AFP.
The British company did not respond immediately to an AFP request for comments.
Police in Birmingham have reminded residents to adhere to social distancing, as the city attempts to curb the rise in coronavirus infections and avoid a local lockdown.
On Saturday, police were called to more than 70 street and house parties and other unlicensed gatherings overnight – including one party which involved two marquees and a DJ.
The force tweeted: “Our officers are out tonight responding to calls about large gatherings. Please stick to Government guidelines and keep safe”.
The warnings follow growing concerns about the rising number of cases within the city. Birmingham, which is the second most populous city in the UK, has seen infection rates increase to 32.1 per 100,000 in recent days.
Forty-four people — 31 male and 13 female –have died from coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, according to a press release of Directorate General of Health Services.
The death toll now stands at 3,557 and the death rate stands at 1.32 percent, the press release said.
Two thousand six hundred and seventeen people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours and the infection rate is 19.88 percent.
The World Health Organization (WHO) says discussions are underway with Russia regarding a possible pre-qualification of the world’s first COVID-19 vaccine.
“We’re in close contact with the Russian health authorities and discussions are underway regarding a possible pre-qualification of the vaccine by WHO,” WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic told a virtual press briefing on Tuesday, reports Xinhua.
Jasarevic explained that the pre-qualification of any vaccine involves rigorous review and evaluation of all the data required for safety and efficacy in clinical trials and noted that at the WHO level, this process would be the same for any candidate.
He said each country has national regulatory bodies that approve the use of vaccines or drugs in its territory. ……….
Forty-two more coronavirus patients died in Bangladesh in last 24 hours, raising the total fatality number to 3,513. Besides, infection cases reached 2,68,498 with 2,995 more virus patients.
Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) confirmed the figure through a press release on Wednesday afternoon. Of the dead patients, 33 were male and nine were female.
