Feels good to know Sri Lanka tour is confirmed: Soumya

Bangladesh opener Soumya Sarkar said after today’s individual practice session at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur that he felt very good to know that the Tigers’ upcoming tour of Sri Lanka has now been confirmed. 

Bangladesh were originally scheduled to play a three-Test series in Sri Lanka in July-August before the series was postponed. After months of discussion between the two concerned boards — BCB and SLC — it was yesterday confirmed through a media release that the Bangladesh national team will return to competitive cricket following a break imposed by the coronavirus pandemic, through their tour of Sri Lanka, slated to begin with a Test series from October 24.

‘The storm over Bangladesh economy has blown over’

Bangladesh might be one of only two ASEAN and South Asian economies to register positive growth in 2020 despite a global recession that is shaping up to be historic in scale, according to Standard Chartered Bank’s research team.

Covid-19: 44 die, 2,617 infected in 24 hours

Forty-four people — 31 male and 13 female –have died from coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, according to a press release of Directorate General of Health Services.

The death toll now stands at 3,557 and the death rate stands at 1.32 percent, the press release said.

Two thousand six hundred and seventeen people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours and the infection rate is 19.88 percent.

WHO in talks with Russia on Covid-19 vaccine

The World Health Organization (WHO) says discussions are underway with Russia regarding a possible pre-qualification of the world’s first COVID-19 vaccine.

“We’re in close contact with the Russian health authorities and discussions are underway regarding a possible pre-qualification of the vaccine by WHO,” WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic told a virtual press briefing on Tuesday, reports Xinhua.

Jasarevic explained that the pre-qualification of any vaccine involves rigorous review and evaluation of all the data required for safety and efficacy in clinical trials and noted that at the WHO level, this process would be the same for any candidate.

He said each country has national regulatory bodies that approve the use of vaccines or drugs in its territory. ……….

Police foil terror plot at Sylhet shrine, arrest 5 suspects

A counterterrorism team arrested five members of Neo-Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (Neo JMB) on Tuesday even as the banned outfit was planning to carry out major terror attacks in the country, a senior police officer said.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Counterterrorism and Transnational Crime (CCTC) Deputy Commissioner Saiful Islam confirmed the arrests by a team of CTTC from Sylhet and said that they are being brought to national capital Dhaka for further questioning.

The arrested men included two students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet and one student of Madan Mohan College in Sylhet, Sylhet police officials said.

The militant outfit is led by Naimuzzaman in the Sylhet region.

Will attain double digit in ease of doing business index in 2021: Salman F Rahman

Private Industry and Investment Adviser to the Prime Minister Salman F Rahman on Wednesday said Bangladesh will attain double digit next year in the global ranking of ease of doing business.

He made the remark at a virtual meeting for the launching of three new services on the Online One Stop Service Portal of Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA).

Verification of National Identity Card, Security Clearance of Security Services Department and Land Use Clearance of Chittagong Development Authority services were formally launched through the virtual meeting.

Inaugurating the function, Salman F Rahman called upon all to work collectively to increase local and international investment.

42 more deaths, 2,995 positive cases reported in Bangladesh

Forty-two more coronavirus patients died in Bangladesh in last 24 hours, raising the total fatality number to 3,513.
Besides, infection cases reached 2,68,498 with 2,995 more virus patients.

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) confirmed the figure through a press release on Wednesday afternoon.
Of the dead patients, 33 were male and nine were female.

Asia’s FIFA 2022 World Cup qualifiers postponed

Asia’s upcoming qualifying matches for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2023 Asian Cup have been postponed to next year because of the COVID-19 pandemic which has wreaked havoc across the entire world.

“In light of the current COVID-19 situation in many countries, FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) have jointly decided that the upcoming qualifying matches for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023, originally scheduled to take place during the international match windows in October and November 2020, will be rescheduled to 2021,” AFC said in a statement on Wednesday
